Why candle care matters

At Opal & Ember Candles, we believe every burn should be perfect. Proper candle care ensures you enjoy every hour of your candle's life, from its pure scent to its clean burn. By following our simple guide, you prevent common issues like tunneling and soot, allowing the authentic botanical aromas to fill your space exactly as intended.

The first burn: a crucial step

The very first burn sets the stage for your candle's entire life. Let your Opal & Ember candle burn for 3 to 4 hours, or until the melted wax pool reaches the glass all the way around. This "wax memory" prevents tunneling, ensuring you enjoy every precious drop of soy wax and the full 45-60+ hour burn time you paid for.

Trim your wick for a perfect flame

Always snip the cooled cotton wick to ¼ inch before every single light. This small step keeps your flame steady, prevents carbon "mushrooming," and stops black soot from staining your beautiful vessel. An overgrown wick can burn too hot, scorching delicate essential oils and compromising the subtle scent notes of your candle.

Extinguish with care

Instead of blowing out your candle, gently press the wick into the liquid wax pool with a wick dipper to extinguish the flame, then straighten it back up. Blowing out a candle creates an acrid burst of smoke that instantly overpowers the delicate, calming room aroma. Wick dipping snuffs the flame instantly with zero smoke, leaving only the natural botanicals lingering in your space.

Common mistakes to avoid

Prevent these issues to ensure the best experience with your Opal & Ember Candles:

  • Short first burn (< 2 hours): Causes tunneling straight down the center, permanently wasting up to 50% of your wax.
  • Untrimmed wicks: Creates an oversized, flickering flame that scorches natural botanical oils and leaves black soot on walls and ceilings.
  • Burning over 4 hours: Overheats the wax pool, causing the wick to drift off-center and burn unevenly.
  • Blowing out flames: Produces acrid smoke that ruins the aroma and risks hot wax splattering surfaces.
  • Burning to the very bottom: The bare flame can superheat and crack the glass, damaging furniture. Always stop when ½ inch of wax remains.
